Vitalsecurity.org is back...and not a moment too soon.

A lot has happened in the realms of net security since Vitalsecurity.net ceased to be. The crackers got smarter; the security guys became ever more resilient. File sharing has come and gone - open source is under attack from major players with confused intentions, and the biggest sources of worry online nowadays are spam, virii and paedophiles clambering out of your monitor to abduct little jimmy at a moment's notice.

It's all so depressing.

And yet, back in the good old days of 2001, a website was put together with the simple intention of assembling a collection of well presented, easy to understand security papers that kept tech-speak to a minimum and opened up the world of security to everyone.

Sure, there were a stack of sites like it - and it rode pretty close to every other hacker site out there, that just wanted to dress up as a security source so the feds didn't kick the door in at four in the morning. but that was just the fashion at that time.

Vitalsecurity.net was different.

Different enough that it was still around after six months.

Different enough that, even now, people have whole copies of the site on their webspace for people to view.

Different enough that copies of those articles exist on a slew of websites for download.

And now...not a moment too soon...Vitalsecurity.org is back.

But what are we returning to?

Virii and spammers run amok, SCO trying to crush open source, corporations suing 12 year olds for copyright violation and every second webpage supposedly containing its very own pop-up-paedo.

Add to this lame-assed corporate slickness turning the net into one long, drawn out advert and its no longer about writing papers telling you how to defend your PC.

It's about defending the very fabric of the internet itself.

And you'll see this shift of focus in the content we provide. The issue of the web is now far more vast and pressing than some random script kiddie attack.

Vitalsecurity.org is now no longer dedicated to the security of your PC.

It's about the preservation of this wonderful, maddening, glorious tool we take for granted.
