Peek that booty. Fight the power one last time...
China. Zimbabwe. Spain. Australia. Iran. Saudi Arabia. What do all these places have in common? They all censor the internet to some degree from their "easily corrupted" citizens. In far eastern countries, censorship of free thought is now considered so important that in China, for example, all ISP's are state-run. 21 countries currently censor the net in this fashion.
All these programs, movements and ideas are now being slowly suppressed by both Eastern and Western Governments, and its a long time since I can remember Peekabooty mentioned in IT news (remember its launch, when they couldn't actually get a domain name for all the cybersquatters snapping them up?) In case you've been living on another planet, Peekabooty runs in the background of your PC, and when someone requests a highly dangerous website such as, ooh, CNN.com, the randomly selected Peekabooty enabled PC retrieves the webpage, encrypts it and sends it to the user in the scary fascist state. As well as this, you can also pull up webpages supposedly "banned" through the wonderful world of webmail servers. Request a page from the server, and it'll send the site to you by email. This is now a flourishing movement, and an example of this can be found here. Add to this 6/4, Camera/Shy and a whole bunch of other programs and its clear that as long as nanny states invent new means to smother its citizens, freedom of speech and a view to democracy will always find a way through the cracks in said State's armour. It's time to fuck 'em down with the warrior sound. A nostalgic flashback to the July 4th, 2001 Hacktivismo manifesto here.
Worse still, America, land of the free, home of the brave actually builds technology that allows the Chinese government to censor anything it doesn't like - which is pretty much everything. Seems like freedom of speech is not free of a price.
This is old news to some, and indeed the Hactivismo movement has been running for some time. But success of programs like Peekabooty and indeed, Hactivismo itself, depend on it being pushed and publicised like never before.
