MIRT has arrived!

From the cut and paste blurb:

Castlecops is starting a new antimalware initiative called MIRT (Malware Incident Reporting and Termination) . It is similar to the already successful PIRT (Phishing Incident Reporting and Termination) project . The goal of MIRT will be to collect malware samples , test them against antimalware applications and then distribute them to the vendors that missed them . There will also be a parallel organized effort to take the offending sites and/or pages down , while reporting them in detail to the authorities.

Some more here, along with the outbreak of a security related discussion about just how cool this thing is likely to be. I'm all for security related buttkicking groups, as they tend to fill the greasy cracks that the legal eagles and the law enforcement guys just can't touch. Having said that, we need to be careful we don't suddenly hail this new collective of gunslingers as Jesus with a Laptop, because too many groups have arrived with an overall agenda of "cleaning up the entire Internet", and the hype generated has never quite matched up to the results. I'm optimistic that this new offering will indeed do some damage to the bad guys, but in my opinion we're still not attacking this issue correctly.

Okay, it's time to tease....

/ obligatory link, because it's always fun to tease
