Phishing the Matrix

As some of you may know, I'm quite involved in The Matrix Online. For one thing, punching people in the face is awesome.

For another thing, so is having my Fourth Wall army of the night available in-game to report spyware and adware issues to.

But mainly, it's all about the punching.

You can imagine my surprise, then, when I happened to see the following strange, strange passage from a Matrix Online bulletin regarding Phishing sites and the like. Check it out:

Here at SOE we do not offer enticing ways to earn in-game money through email. We prefer the old fashioned way of logging in, killing mobs, completing quests, etc. Be extremely cautious when exposed to external sites through email, claiming to be affiliated with Sony Online. You will only be prompted to enter your password when logging into an SOE game, or when visiting an official (Sony) Station site.

...wait, the whole point of a phishing site is to.....ask for your password on their official looking Sony Station site imitation. I could see the kind of people who this advice is intended for in the first place being vaguely confused by this.

"oh look, this site MUST be official because its asking for my password....and that thing on the matrix site said only official sites ask for this info...."

...a day later...

"....oh look, my login name has been changed to jimmy spankpants and I've been banned for life."

The full ramble can be seen here. Other than the above goof, it's fairly decent and makes vague references to how awesome punching people in the face is. We can only hope and pray that, in future, more official communications follow their lead and include references to punching, spin-kicking, filling a wall full of shells and CRAZY MAD MATRIX PUNCHING SOMEONE THROUGH A WALL, YO.
