MoneySavingExpert.com - Nigerian DDoS?
Yep, the UKs favourite money saving advice site has been down for some hours due to a rather large DDoS attack. The frontpage currently looks like this:
The site tries to draw a connection between the attack and their recent "crusade" against PPI. For anyone who doesn't know what PPI is, if you have a mortgage in the UK you were probably press-ganged into taking out all kinds of mortgage payment protection in case you die / catch fire / explode etc. The general feeling is that, well, these things are a bit of a rip-off.
However, I really don't think the blame for the DoS lies at the feet of a rabid collection of insurance companies and protection plan salesmen. I think we should be looking towards Nigeria. Why?
Well, a little while ago I came across a pretty interesting 419 Scam that targetted people looking to purchase / rent property in certain areas of the UK. You can read more about it here and here.
One of the first places to start asking questions about these property related Emails was....you've guessed it....people on the Moneysavingexpert forums. The scam seemed to die out pretty quickly after this, so I could imagine anyone standing to make money from a bit of 419 fun being rather annoyed.
Annoyed, and in the mood for DoS. Or DOS. Or DDoS. Or BYOBBQ. Or however the Hell you write it.
That's my theory anyway, and I'm sticking to it. Unless I'm wrong. In which case, I reserve the right to be contradictory.
