Look out, it's Angry Apple Guy
Which he is. Cheap shots, contrived logic, ad hominem attacks and a complete lack of understanding with regards how writing a blog that serves the needs of those with a technical bent, computer savvy reporters, those who have no clue whatsoever about IT but want to stay safe and non technical journos who want to learn more about "the whole security thing" operates on a day to day basis can be yours for the taking here.
All because someone said the word "virus", apparently.
Also, here's a stupid song I just made up.
ANGRY APPLE GUY! WOO-OOOO-OOOOO!
HE SAYS A LOT OF STUFF BECAUSE HE'S "IN THE KNOW"!
ANGRY APPLE GUY! WOO-OOOO-OOOOO!
PUTS CANDLES AT YOUR FEET, 'CAUSE WINDOZE BLOWS!
ANGRY APPLE GUY! WOO-OOOO-OOOOO!
WANTS TO GIVE YOU A CLASSIFICATION TEST!
ANGRY APPLE GUY! WOO-OOOO-OOOOO!
HAS A NERD RAGE ABOUT MAC OS X!
/ GUITAR SOLO
OH YES, HE'LL PROVE YOU WRONG!
UNLESS YOU MAKE YOUR COMMENTS TWICE AS LONG!
WATCH OUT FOR HIS MICROSOFT CHEERLEADER BARBS!
CAUSE I'M MARRIED TO BILL GATES, GOD BLESS HIS HEART!
/ SLOW SECTION
I ADDED NOTHING TO THE DISCUSSION!
/ POWER CHORD
EXCEPT A SAD ATTEMPT AT DIVERSION!
(Yes, I am using your own words as the basis for my song. Enjoy)
DOESN'T WANT TO GIVE ME A HUG!
/ POWER CHORD
EVEN THOUGH I OFFERED HIM A FREE WINDOWS MUG!
/ LEATHER PANTS THRUSTING
ANGRY APPLE GUY! WOO-OOOO-OOOOO!
HAS A BIG THING FOR BLOGGERS AND JOURNALISTS!
ANGRY APPLE GUY! WOO-OOOO-OOOOO!
HE PROBABLY SEES NOW I'M TAKING THE PI -
.....is this mike still on?

My only regret is that I didn't get to mention the fact I can get him a free Microsoft mug in the song somewhere.
Maybe I can do that in the Timbaland remix.
EL OH EL. Is all I can say to that.
I'm still trying to work out exactly what set him off. he went from some bizarre ranting over the word "virus" to a position that seems to declare bloggers who try to cater for mass consumption are the spawn of satan.
The really important thing here is that I added in some lines about the free mug.
He's so insistent that only HIS definition of these words he seems to claim ownership of are correct, even though its seems entirely reasonable to approach the subject of "viruses" as a catch all phrase when specifically talking about an advert that also simply says "viruses".
as people have already pointed out, most normal web users wont see the advert and think "but what about the fake codecs, botnets, trojans"? They just see the word virus and think: "this computer is indestructible".
trying to stuff any and every blog article regarding apples where the word virus is mentioned into a black hole of "this doesn't count as informative journalism" or whatever hes trying to do is surreal.
its a fucking BLOG ENTRY about an advert talking about "no viruses" (read: infections. because thats the intention of whatever marketing team put it together).
it seems everyone else who read it did so and understood it without having a problem with it. So you have to ask yourself, exactly what IS the need to endlessly pick at something to inconsequential?
"I generally find that reciting hardware ownership — Mac or PC — unprovable, and completely unnecessary. Don’t you?"
Thanks to the magic of something called "technology", taking a photograph of him sitting next to his mac waving would be a pretty good way of proving the "unprovable".
I knew a real hardcore apple fan a few years ago. he was intensely annoying about anything remotely related to security, and no doubt his vision of nirvana was an apple mac endlessly teabagging a windows PC for all eternity.
woe betide anyone who distubs that teabagging.
@SarahFaceTime
Step away from the caffeine PG...or is it all the sunshine that's got to you ;-)
I'd also add, this person is missing the point of the whole "bloggers should be journalists" thing. It's NOT that paperghost or rick ferguon are saying theyre not journalists so they should be allowed to be "innacurate".
The POINT is that actual journalists writing for newspapers are SUPPOSED to present material that is unbiased and free of personal opinion unless of course its an "opinion piece" (in theory, anyway).
The whole point of a blog is that you can say your OPINION on things, and say WHY you think something is as it is, and present a wholly biased approach if you feel like it. you're not writing for the Independant, for gods sake. and if you say something in such a way, i'll happily assume you have a particular reason for doing so (using virus as a catch all in that particular circumstance for the reason given seems fine to me, i couldnt care less.)
Being biased and / or opinionated on your blog doesn't mean you're going to be "factually incorrect".
However, when he starts moving into the waters of "factual inaccuracy" PURELY because rick ferguson said the word virus, my bullshit detector starts going off.
"counterpoint" is really straining to present that (and anything that agrees with that point of view or reasons for doing so) as something horrendously, awfully bad.
everyone else is seemingly shrugging their shoulders. i dont run a widely read blog, and ive no idea how id even begin to juggle the various needs of the people reading such a site. start writing about apples and infections and things immediately get even tricker because someone like this guy will show up and start picking and picking and picking at things nobody gives a stuff about.
its easy to decry the system youre given to work in when you dont have to work inside that framework yourself.
Urgh fanboys.
Sure, there are some fundamental problems with Windows - they are 1) logging in as an adminisrator all the time and 2) Internet Explorer.
But look beyond that, and all OSes are basically the same. If you remotely exploit a system service / daemon or whatever then it's possible to completely control the target system if you know what you are doing. Unpatched flaws in these OS components are a real nightmare - and to give MS some credit, their patching regime and tools are pretty good. Apple.. well, Apple's software is probably even buggier than Microsoft's.. and their patching regime is a lot worse.
It doesn't matter what OS you have - Windows, OS X, Linux, VMS, OS/400, Multics - they are all vulnerable to attack through buggy code.
I think fundamentally the thing that keeps Mac users safe at the moment is that the Bad Guys are pretty lazy, and they like their malware generation kits for Windows which give them a large number of potential victims for minimal effort. I think Mac hacking at the moment involves a bit of hard work. And I also think that situation will change.
I think we just found the next year's surprise contestant for Britain's Got Talent.
